10 Dec 2009If you’re like me, you’re always looking up prices on Amazon. I got tired of the whole lookup process:
1) copying whatever I was interested in (product name, ISBN, whatever)
2) opening a new browser tab
3) surfing over to Amazon
4) pasting in the thing I was looking for and pressing return
The solution?
I wrote an Automator action (which in Snow Leopard ) gets installed as a Service.
Translation in English: it means you can highlight text, right-click, select “Lookup on Amazon” and BOOM! it opens a new browser and searches on Amazon for you.
Download it here. After downloading, unzip it, then double-click on the ‘Lookup on Amazon’ workflow (this will open the ‘Automator’ program). From the ‘File’ menu, select ‘Save As’, then click ‘Ok’ when you see the ‘Save Service As’ dialog box.
And, yes, I’m lazy.

9 Nov 2009Jason Snell at Macworld wrote a piece about tech specs and Apple’s advertising, or rather, non-advertising of said specs.
Apple’s iPhone Product Marketing Manager Bob Borchers said that “the usual speeds and feeds aren’t the way Apple likes to talk about the iPhone”.
In today’s tech market, you’re saturated with numbers and ratings. 2 Gigabytes!! With new 10 Mega-Tega-Pegga-Flops!! Think about it for a second. How many people know (or even care) what those numbers mean? People (for the most part) are satisified knowing that “this years model is faster than last years”. Granted, there will always be a segment of the population (techies) that want the exact processor model & speed, but for I’m guessing 90% of the population, those tech numbers are met with glossy eyes.
Apple’s success lies in the fact that their products “just work” and are simple to figure out. Ever compare the ‘Windows 7′ upgrade chart to Apple’s Snow Leopard upgrade?
Apple:
Snow Leopard upgrade $29 (single user)
Snow Leopard upgrade $49 (5 users)
Microsoft:
Windows 7 Home Premium From $119
Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack $149
Windows 7 Professional $199
Windows 7 Ultimate From $219
Windows Anytime Upgrade: Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium $79
Windows Anytime Upgrade: Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional $89
Windows Anytime Upgrade: Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate $139
What’s the difference between ‘Home Premium’ and ‘Professional’ vs Ultimate? I’m a tech person and I’m confused about what the difference is.

27 Mar 2009Due to some trademark issues, I’ve had to rename the ‘Tar Heel’ app to ‘Tar Hoops’. It also has a new snazzy icon (yes, more trademark issues forced that change). Version 1.2 (with these changes) is currently in review on iTunes.

28 Feb 2009I’ve submitted v1.1 to iTunes for review. It should hit the iTunes store sometime this coming week.
The change in this version is the RSS feed. The guys at Tar Heel Times have put together a custom basketball feed. Don’t worry, it still includes the news from TarHeel Blue!
